We carry out adaptations to homes to help tenants that are elderly and/or disabled live independent lives.
We can carry out adaptations such as:
- Fitting grab rails or stair rails
- Adapting a bathroom to have a walk-in shower.
- Fitting stairlifts
Anyone in your household who has difficulty in getting in, out or around your home can apply for help wth adaptations.
Social Services must first carry out an assessment to see just what your mobility problems are and if adaptations can help.
How it works
The occupational therapist will contact you for an appointment to make an assessment of your needs.
If adaptations cannot be carried out, the occupational therapist will advise you how to live in your home more comfortably.
If adaptations are needed, Hounslow Homes are informed and will carry out the work. Sometimes we will need to employ specialist contractors for larger adaptations such as bathrooms or stairlifts.
The whole process can take from 3 weeks to 18 months depending on the work needed. (there is currently a waiting list for works to begin)
Once the adaptation is complete, Social Services will check the work to make sure the adaptations meet your needs.

Adaptations for Home Owners and Private Tenants
If you are a home owners or a private tenant you can apply for a Grant for adaptations. A grant is issued based on your income, benefits, savings and investments.
As with council homes, only essential adaptations can be provided. You must arrange price quotes and oversee the work, but Occupational Therapy can provide an allowance so that a private agent or agency can do this on your behalf.
