A water meter works in the same way as a gas or electric meter - it measures the amount so you only pay for what you have used (plus any other charges your supplier will add).
All new build properties have a water meter fitted, but many council properties do not have one. You may decide that that having a water meter will save you money, as well as making you waste less water and consider the environment. If you decide to have a water meter fitted, you must first seek our permission before having the work done.
We do not usually object to this work being carried out, however, you should seek permission before having the meter fitted. Contact the Customer Service Centre on 0800 085 65 75 with your request. Your details will be passed to the Electrical Mechanical Engineers Team who will confirm to you in writing that permission has been granted.
You can also make your request in writing to customerservicecentre@hounslowhomes.org.uk or alternatively to:

You are also advised to check that your mains water supply stopvalve can be turned off - you will not be able to have a meter fitted if you cannot turn off the water supply. We will not be able to carry out this type of repair as an emergency if you discover a problem on the day.
Once the work has been completed by your supplier, your supplier is responsible for repairs or maintenance to the meter, so you will need to contact them directly to report any problems.
